One of Jackson County’s community-based matches recently celebrated their ten year match anniversary. Mindy Douglas was first matched with Macy Williams on August 15, 2007. At the time, Macy was just 6 years old.
Big Sister Mindy first volunteered as a mentor while in college at Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois. After moving to Seymour she had an interest in getting involved again in the program. When reflecting on her time with Macy, Mindy said it “has been a true blessing.” She stated that “being a mentor is a humbling and rewarding experience.” Macy acknowledged how she has benefitted from the BBBS program. “Mindy has provided me with a good model and path to follow. She has helped me grow as an individual and has been a great example of what kind of person I should strive to be.”
Both Mindy and Macy have fond memories of their time together, including regular trips to get ice cream or go to the movies. They’ve been to the zoo, concerts, and dinner theatre shows over the years. Mindy has enjoyed “watching Macy participate in her activities like swimming and band.” Macy said one of the many things she likes about her Big, Mindy, is “how she is always there for me and pushes me to reach my full potential.” Mindy discussed seeing Macy grow and develop over the years. “She was a shy, quiet girl when I met her.” “Macy is more determined and focused than she has ever been.” Macy plans to finish high school, then go to college to enter the medical field. She reflected on the impact of the program, recognizing “Bigs who will always want the best for you.”
